Privacy support in people-centric sensing

چکیده
In this paper we present an approach to support privacy in people-centric sensing. In particular, we propose a technique that allows a central authority to select a subset of users whose past positions provide a good coverage of a given area of interest, without explicitly georeferencing them. To achieve this goal, we propose an efficient algorithm to solve the well known, NP -complete Set Cover problem that does not require explicit knowledge of the sets, but only uses their compact, privacy preserving representations or sketches. We perform a thorough experimental analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique and its sensitivity to a few key parameters using public data from real applications. Experimental results support the effectiveness of the proposed approach to efficiently produce accurate environmental or social maps, at the same time preserving users’ privacy.

As the domains of pervasive computing and sensor networking are expanding, there is an ongoing trend towards assistive living and healthcare support environments that can effectively assimilate these technologies according to human needs. Most of the existing research in assistive healthcare follows a more passive approach and has focused on collecting and processing data using a static-topolog...
متن کاملLocation Privacy in Urban Sensing Networks: Research Challenges and Directions
During the last few years there has been an increasing number of people-centric sensing projects. These combine location information with sensors available on mobile phones, giving birth to a different dimension in sensing our environment and providing us with new opportunities to create collective intelligence systems to address urban-scale problems, like air pollution, noise, traffic, etc. Ho...
متن کاملA Web Service-Based Framework Model for People-Centric Sensing Applications Applied to Social Networking
As the Internet evolved, social networks (such as Facebook) have bloomed and brought together an astonishing number of users. Mashing up mobile phones and sensors with these social environments enables the creation of people-centric sensing systems which have great potential for expanding our current social networking usage. However, such systems also have many associated technical challenges, ...

متن کاملMetroSense Project: People-Centric Sensing at Scale
Looking forward 10-20 years we envision Internet scale sensing where the majority of the traffic on the network is sensor data and the majority of applications used every day by the general populace integrates sensing and actuation in some form. Sensing will be people-centric. On the other hand, nearly all published sensor network research over the last five years has focused on isolated, small...
